Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Stage hypnosis is done for entertainment using volunteers who have been tested for high suggestibility. These people are put in a somnambulistic trance. This is when a person can walk, talk etc as if they are in a normal state of consciousness. Hypnotherapy is for therapeutic benefits. People go into a comfortable level of trance and are helped to make the changes they require. Self hypnosis can also be taught by the therapist.

What should I expect when I go to see a hypnotherapist?

When you go to see a hypnotherapist he/she will find out what you want help with and decide on how best to help you. The therapist will help you get into a relaxed state and then facilitate you into a trance where a lot of good work can be done. He/she will do this by making suggestions which you choose to respond to. In some cases one session will be enough to do the work to enable the necessary changes to occur for your desired outcome.

Can I get stuck in trance?

No. This is the basic answer. Sometimes people fall asleep especially if they are tired and also because trance can be so relaxing. Even if you are in a deep trance you will come out if you hear a loud noise or want to go to the toilet. When you get absorbed in a good book or an exciting film you can be unaware of people talking around you but if the door bell rings you will hear it. This is because you are in a trance which occurs naturally to everybody at some time. In a hypnotherapy session the therapist induces a trance which is similar to this. He/she will guide you out of trance towards the end of the session.

Will I give away my secrets?

Much of the time you will not speak whilst in trance. You will always be aware of anything you say and will not say anything you do not wish to. Anything you say to a therapist in or out of trance is in the strictest of confidence.

Will I remember everything than happens while I am in trance?

You do not remember everything that ever happens to you or every detail in every conversation you have. It is no different when you have been in hypnosis. However, you will remember what is important to remember.

How will I know that I have been in trance?

As there is no such thing as a "hypnotised feeling", you probably won't feel as though you are in a trance, but what you will most likely be aware of is a particularly pleasant feeling of mental and physical relaxation. Almost anybody can enter the state of hypnosis, the exceptions being very young children, the mentally challenged, and inebriates or those using psychotropic drugs.

How do I know that a therapist is legitimate?

It is important to see a fully qualified hypnotherapist. At present there are no laws in the UK about setting up as a hypnotherapist. When choosing a hypnotherapist it is good to look out for memberships of hypnotherapy organisations such as the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) or the General Hypnotherapy Register
